At the same time he had always been very insecure about himself, thinking he'd never fit in or finding a mate who would take him as-is. Only in his late teens he came to terms with the fact he felt quite different about guys. It was a tumultuous time for him, as he had always lived a bit of a reclusive life and needed to learn how to navigate this new one without much guidance.
